Fantastic technologies are emerging and being developed so fast that it is hard to predict even the near future of civilization. But one thing we know for sure is that we are being overwhelmed by the wave of digital information. There are currently no viable alternatives to the concept of data centers that serve as a breakwater. Thus, it is crucial to prepare them for this new reality. The article discusses the ways to improve data center energy efficiency, security and performance. 12 Six Sigma: What? Why? How? The article focuses on the Six Sigma process and product quality management concept. Also discussed are the key principles of this methodology as well as the basic formulas to calculate the process quality factor. Also included are descriptions of FMC modules as well as FPGA-based carrier modules implemented in CompactPCI Serial and OpenVPX standards. 54 New generation of a domestic heterogeneous computing platform By Andrey Parfenov One of the ways to increase computing performance is to use the platforms with heterogeneous architecture. They offer the possibility to efficiently utilize the computational power of processors, graphics accelerators and programmable logic integrated circuits. The domestic new generation platform presented in the article is capable of simultaneously employing modules with different architectures in a variety of configurations. The article provides an example of solving hydroacoustic antenna beamforming tasks using a computing system based on this platform. 58 Advantech machine vision solutions By Anna Klekot and Aleksandr Ivanov Machine vision is a relatively new but promising technology. The growth in computing power and the miniaturization of hardware offer a possibility to solve various application tasks in the projects where the abandonment of manual labor would have been unthinkable even a few years ago. This article provides examples of such projects and an overview of some machine vision devices. 66 Touch input devices: perspectives on applications in severe environments By Yurii Timonin Today panel computers with touch monitors have become ubiquitous in areas where it is necessary to use rugged computing devices. The distinguishing feature of the system is that its core is based on the domestic components. /Metallurgy 84 Ark steel melting furnace control system By Anton Makhnutin and Anton Belousov The article describes the automatic power control system for an arc steel making furnace based on SIEMENS equipment. Also included are the average data on the operation of arc furnaces upon implementation of the automatic power control system. /Electric Power Industry 88 Wind turbines today The article provides an overview of the design and operation of modern wind turbines. The essential element of these units is the control and diagnostic system that collects and analyzes hundreds of signals coming from various sensors. Using the SCM7B34 module as an example, the article discusses the design and advantages of Dataforth signal conditioners for use in harsh environments. /Chemical Industry 92 Implementation of automatic process control system at the Polyamide-6 production unit By Igor Dvunitkin The article describes an automated process control system for the Polyamide-6 unit. Also included is information on the architecture and characteristics of the automated process control system, the description of key functions and engineering solutions that have been implemented based on the SIMATIC PCS7 control system.
